Showing to a capacity crowd of 2000 at the Hall, the Laskar Pelangi Musical will perform one show on weekdays (Monday to Thursday) from 14.00 to 15.00 Western Indonesia Time, and two shows from 14.00 to 15.00 and 16.00 to 17.00 on weekends (Saturday to Sunday). The shows are free of charge, but spectators will still have to pay the entrance fee to the Ancol Recreation Park and the Dunia Fantasi theme Park.
Set in the beautiful Island of Belitung, in the Bangka-Belitung Province, at the time of the collapse of the one-time booming tin mining industry, Laskar Pelangi or the Rainbow Troops tells the story of a tight-knit group of poor village students and their teachers fighting for education and dignity, even as they face continuous hardship. Together, they take the audience on a journey through the beauty of childhood friendship, the inspiration of love, and the power of education. The students’ magnetic personalities and unflagging determination are sure to inspire.
The Laskar Pelangi Musical is a collaboration of Indonesia’s top producers for stage and film. Indonesia’s own prominent Mira Lesmana and Toto Arto are its producers, with director Riri Riza, and the Musical’s lyrics and music created by Erwin Gutawa and Mira Lesmana, while dances are choreographed by Hartati, and stage and visual effects created by Jay Subyakto. Erwin Gutawa is also conductor of the orchestra accompanying the musical.
Laskar Pelangi started out as a bestselling novel published in 2005 written by Andrea Hirata which is the first of 4 series of the Laskar Pelangi tetralogy. In 2008, Miles Production turned the story into one of the most successful films in Indonesia’s movie history. Achieving the record of almost 4.6 million spectators, the movie is recognized among the most watched movies in the last ten years and has received international awards such as the Signis Award in the Hongkong International Film Festival, the Silver Dolphin award from the Festroia International Film Festival, and the Cinepanza Award as the best film voted by the audience at the Cinepaz 20th Children Film Festival . In 2010, Miles Production and Link Entertainment adapted the bestselling novel and movie into a musical opera which was first performed at the Ismail Marzuki Jakarta Theater in December 2010.
Boys and girls appearing in the Laskar Pelangi musical also performed parts to a spellbound audience at the Closing Ceremony of the 2011 SEA Games in Palembang.
Choreographer of the show, Hartati promised for the special Year End Holidays show, Laskar Pelangi The Musical will be highlighted with a lot of attractive features. There will be new arrangements in the choreography and stage blocking so it will stay fresh even for those who have already seen it. Jay Subiakto returns as the production designer and will redesign all the layout and visual effects which will be even more fascinating than the last show. Erwin Gutawa, composer and musical director of the show has also made adjustments for the 1 hour show, making sure that the beautiful voices of the 55 performers will reverberate spellbindingly across the hall.
The novelist, Andrea Hirata hopes that every child will have the opportunity to enjoy the special show since it is full of Indonesian Culture and positive motivation and inspirations for everybody.
